FAMILY OPEN MIC In a continued effort to support emerging artists and local musicians, The Parkland Solstice Festival Society, in conjunction with Parkland Community Centre/Park 96, hosted two Family Open Mics at Park 96.  Our first one was held Saturday January 24 2009 in the park's beautifully renovated basement.  This inaugural event was a huge success with 10 different groupings of musicians playing on stage.  The groups consisted of solo performers to a full-fledged rock band.  Click here to check out the crowd and a few of our performers. Our second event was held Saturday May 23rd on our Summer Sunday Stage.  An unqualified success!

ART IN THE PARK - Friends of Fish Creek  The Parkland Solstice Festival Society was pleased to participate in the second Art in the Park event, held this year at Sikome Lake on September 13.  The Society made arrangements for the sound system and coordinated several musicians to accompany the many artists surrounding the lake that day.  For more information on the Friends of Fish Creek, click here.

The Song That Built a Community with the Parkland Solstice Festival Society
Wednesday, November 18, 7:30 - 9:30 pm
Midlands Building

Today’s fast-paced, pressurized tempo has entered almost every aspect of our lives. Caught up in the hype, we may not even know our neighbours next door or down the street.  We begin to ask ourselves, “Is this all there is?”

Through The Song That Built a Community participants will learn “There’s a lot more!”— both as  individuals and as part of a community.  The Arts and community participation are a proven medium for internal growth and satisfaction, offer a vital financial and spiritual contribution to a community, and create a movement in families and society that is greater than oneself.

In a friendly and interactive music workshop, residents from Calgary’s southeast community of Parkland will discuss their personal and community experience of growth and fulfillment through participation in the Arts. Through a multimedia presentation, they will show the positive results of community volunteerism. And they will provide an outline of how these personal and community achievements can be replicated in your community.
